Marin Karmitz was born on 7 October 1938. A graduate from the influential IDHEC film school, he was initially assistant director to the filmmakers Jean-Luc Godard, Agnès Varda, Jacques Rozier, Yannick Bellon and Pierre Kast.
Marin Karmitz is the founder of the French independent cinema empire mk2, today run by his sons Nathanaël and Elisha. Comprising production and distribution arms, but also a chain of art-house cinemas, the company has helped to shape the history of cinema for half a century and counting.
