The 17th Academy Awards were held on March 15, 1945 at Grauman's Chinese Theatre, honoring the films of 1944. This was the first time the complete awards ceremony was broadcast nationally, on the Blue Network (later ABC Radio ). Bob Hope hosted the 70-minute broadcast, which included film clips that required explanation for the radio audience. [1]
The Academy Award for Best Art Direction recognizes achievement in art direction on a film. From 1940 through 1956 and again from 1959-1966, it was divided into two categories Best Art Direction (Black-and-White) and Best Art Direction (Color). It changed to its current name, Best Production Design, in 2012 for the 85th Academy Awards. This change resulted from the Art Director's branch of the Academy being renamed the Designer's branch. Since 1947, the award is shared with the Set Decorator(s).
