A critic from Sify wrote that "A remake of the Malayalam movie, `Punjabi House`, it is meant to be a rib-tickler but the Telugu version, `Maa Balaji` comes out a cropper as the theme has nothing much to boast by way of being a comedy".
Punjabi House is probably the most remembered of Rafi Mecartin's films from the 90s. The film has stood the test of time, and its jokes are still fresh and memorable to even now in 2018, 20 years later. I think the film gave a big break to Dileep career's as a mainstream lead actor.

Sep 4, 1998 · Overview. Unni (Dileep) has many debts and no way to repay them. He decides to commit suicide so that his parents can use the insurance money to repay the debts, but he is saved by a fisherman named Gangadharan (Cochin Haneefa) and his employee Ramanan (Harisree Ashokan).
A young man, deeply in debt, tries to commit suicide discreetly, to claim insurance money for his family. When he is rescued from the sea, he plays a mute, so that he does not have to explain anything. He continues to play the part, when it seems to bring him lot of good fortune…
