David Burton was an Olympic games announcer who claimed to be God. While in the Other Place, he met and assisted Kevin Garvey in his missions. In the living world, he traveled around Earth with a lack of care and compassion for anything, assaulting anyone who annoyed him, and claiming responsibility for the Sudden Departure.

    Early years

David Burton was an Australian Olympic games announcer who died on a hike up a mountain sometime before October of 2015, sending him to the Other Place. Somehow he came to an understanding about the nature of the Other Place, as well as the gaining knowledge of Kevin Garvey, a man capable of traveling back and forth between the living world and the Other Place, who was haunted by the spirit of a woman named Patti Levin, his greatest enemy who killed herself in front of him. ("International Assassin") David later claimed to be God, but that his mortal form in the living world wasn't God before he died and went to the Other Place. It is unclear if he was telling the truth, or if he was, when and how exactly he became God, but given how he aided Kevin in the Other Place, it seems he became God as soon as he died. He claimed that as God, Jesus Christ was not his actual son, and he was responsible for the Sudden Departure on October 14, 2011, which he had done simply "because [he] could". ("It's a Matt, Matt, Matt, Matt World")

    Aiding Kevin Garvey

On October 13, 2015, Kevin took a lethal poison to send him to the Other Place's hotel and face down Patti. He took on the role of an assassin and found her in the form of a little girl, where upon he was contacted by his father from the living world, who told him to bring her to the well. On his journey to the well, he was attacked by David, who made it clear there was no going back for him if he destroyed Patti, and told him he was "the most powerful man in the world". Kevin pressed on anyway, and tossed Patti in the well, destroying her spirit and transporting him back to Earth. ("International Assassin") A day later, after Kevin had returned to the living world, he was shot by John Murphy and sent back to the Other Place, this time taking on the role of a policeman. He made his way to the hotel's lobby, where he once again met David, who directed him to sing karaoke if he wanted to go home. He did so and was sent back to the living world, where he would stay for the next three years. ("I Live Here Now")

    Return to Earth

Sometime after helping Kevin with his karaoke, David was himself resurrected and began to travel around Earth, now fully declaring himself God. In the living world, David was violent, bitter, and apathetic. ("It's a Matt, Matt, Matt, Matt World")

David Burton does not appear in the original novel, but God is mentioned and discussed several times.
