Laureatosi in Scienze politiche nel 1970 all'Università di Pavia, Faenza ha insegnato Mass Communication presso il Federal City College di Washington. Dal 1978 al 2004 è stato docente di Sociologia della comunicazione presso l'Università di Pisa. Dal 2005 è passato a insegnare cinematografia presso la Sapienza Università di Roma.
