   • Many of them had addresses in Poplar itself, elsewhere in East London (including south of the river) or in the City (and far fewer in other parts of London). Those living in Poplar were often building tradesmen, publicans or shipwrights.

   Why is Poplar Street called 'Poplar'?

   • In the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries the High Street was sometimes called simply 'Poplar' in title deeds. In 1718 a dweller in the High Street described himself as a resident 'in the hamlet of Poplar Street'. (fn. 9) The institutional buildings of the hamlet were naturally located here.

   Does poplar have public housing?

   • As in the inter-war years, the public housing built by the local authorities in Poplar has been supplemented by various schemes run by housing associations. From the 1950s until the early 1970s such schemes were confined to additional new accommodation provided by two of the associations already based in the area.
