Set in this period, "Jewel in the Palace" is based on a true story about a legendary girl (Jang Geum) who became the first woman to be the supreme royal physician of her times.
Jang-geum's best friend, Yeon-seng, has become the king's concubine while Jang-geum has been away and becomes the eighth Queen. Jang Geum correctly diagnosed that the King was suffering from Behçet's disease and not from typhoid fever.
