The Sign of the Four (1890), also called The Sign of Four, is the second novel featuring Sherlock Holmes by British writer Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Doyle wrote four novels and 56 short stories featuring the fictional detective.
The Sign of the Four begins at the Baker Street home of the infamous detective, Sherlock Holmes, and his assistant, Dr. John Watson. Holmes is a little bored, having no case to work on, and is injecting himself with cocaine—Watson disapproves of this bad habit.
The Sign of the Four is the second Sherlock Holmes story, and was published in 1890 by Arthur Conan Doyle. The novel is one of the earliest examples of the detective genre, and helped popularise it. The novel is seen as problematic because of its depictions of colonialism and racial prejudice.
