Surry County, located at the juncture of the Piedmont and Mountain regions of North Carolina and partially bordering the state of Virginia, was formed in 1771 from Rowan County and was named after either the English County of Surrey (birthplace of royal governor William Tryon) or the Saura (Cheraw) Indians who populated the area.

Surry County was formed from Rowan County in 1771. This was while North Carolina was still a British colony. An Act to form Surry County was proposed to the colonial General Assembly in December of 1770 by Martin Armstrong, Anthony Hampton, and James Dunne.
