The Panchalankurichi Fort was built by Veerapandiya Kattabomman in the late 18th century. It served as his stronghold during his resistance against the British. Although the original fort was destroyed by the British after Kattabomman's capture, the memorial fort that stands today was reconstructed to honour his memory.
