Sep 22, 2012 · In 1966, following the collapse of a film which I hoped to develop with Albert Finney’s production company, on the 1916 Easter uprising in Dublin, I was approached by John Heyman, a British artists’ agent, to make a film based on an original screenplay by Johnny Speight, which dealt with the influence of Steven Shorter, a pop star in the 1960s.
The original script by John Speight was commissioned by producer John Heyman in the wake of the pop music movie explosion exemplified by A Hard Day's Night, and then worked into a more satirical vein by American novelist Norman Bognor to, in the words of Speight, "expose the rotten world of pop."
Mixing pop and film had made a success of A Hard Day’s Night (1964), and Peter Watkins was able to gain funding from Universal Studios for Privilege. Unfortunately for Watkins, his film’s jaundiced satire was at odds with the prevalent feelgood flower-power vibe when it was released in 1967.
