Emmanuelle Marie Charpentier (French pronunciation: [emanɥɛl maʁi ʃaʁpɑ̃tje]; born 11 December 1968 [2]) is a French professor and researcher in microbiology, genetics, and biochemistry. [1] As of 2015, she has been a director at the Max Planck Institute for Infection Biology in Berlin.

Sep 23, 2024 · Emmanuelle Charpentier is a French scientist who discovered, with American biochemist Jennifer Doudna, a molecular tool known as clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats (CRISPR)-Cas9. Their discovery of CRISPR-Cas9 in 2012 laid the foundation for gene editing.
Emmanuelle is the inventor and co-owner of the core intellectual property of the CRISPR-Cas9 technology. Together with Rodger Novak and Shaun Foy, she co-founded CRISPR Therapeutics and ERS Genomics to develop the CRISPR-Cas genome engineering technology for biotechnology and biomedical applications.
Emmanuelle Charpentier and Jennifer Doudna are awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry 2020 for discovering one of gene technology’s sharpest tools: the CRISPR/Cas9 genetic scissors. Researchers can use these to change the DNA of animals, plants and microorganisms with extremely high precision.
