Jul 6, 2007 · The confession and the killing attempt are not simultaneous. The attempt to kill is BEFORE the confession, so in Italian we use the INFINITO PASSATO. So why it's he confessed to tryingand not he confessed to having tried? I guess I understand now why it's gerund and not infinitive (confess is a "to + -ing" verb, right? Just like "look forward to".
Mar 24, 2017 · There's a German idiom "mir fällt ein Stein vom Herzen!" with literal meaning "a stone falls off my heart", but that's not idiomatic in English as far as I know. Common phrases I've heard are "that's a load off my mind" or "that has taken a load off my mind" (and that would fit well to your context of confession)

La confession est avant tout une manière de se remettre dans une disposition droite de pénitent devant l’amour de Dieu. Aujourd’hui on insiste beaucoup sur la dimension du pardon qui est tout à fait juste, mais il faudrait aussi insister du côté de l’absolution, c’est-à-dire sur le fait que cela nous délivre et que cela fait tomber nos liens.
