It had high-flow heads, big ports, a two-level intake manifold, and a six-barrel option (three two-barrel carbs). The engine combined high power and relatively light weight, a fine combination in the Plymouth Duster and Road Runner.

Even with that, the 340 powered cars from that era are still more than competitive in the mid-stock classes (D/SA - G/SA, depending on body) and often hold NHRA national records in those classes.
Jun 10, 2013 · Closed chambers, found on some 318s, and mostly the 273s. Open chamber heads are 318, 340 and 360, Intake ports are shared with the 273 and 318. 340 and 360 share intake port size. 318 have 1.78 intake ports. 340 has 1.88 (low performance) and 2.02 (performance heads).

Now gas is sold by an average of the higher RON number and the lower MON (motor octane number). So today's 93 octane may be equivalent to 97 or higher octane gas of the past.

I know that we have 318 steel cranks, and it seems the 360 has different kinds of iron used.

The first "LA" engine, the 273, appeared in the 1964 cars; the basic design was used in the 2017 Viper V-10.
Jan 12, 2012 · Make sure the fan blades are half way in to the shroud.On timing, set initial to 8 degrees at idle. Get a dial back timing light, and check advance at 3000RPM. It should run at around 34-36 degrees. If it exceeds that number, remove the vacuum hose and insert an allen wrench that fits the socket inside the vacuum can.
Dec 21, 2017 · USN Retired. Spool mount V 8 K frame should be on both the 73 and 74 A Body dusters, darts . The engine spool mounts are different only between 318 and 340/360 on the left side. The mopar number is 3642811 for 318 and 3642813 for the 340/360. The right side is the same for 318/340/360 which is 3642810.
