B. G. Kher. Balasaheb Gangadhar Khare (24 August 1888 – 8 March 1957 [1] [2]) was an Indian politician who served as the prime minister of Bombay (1937–1939, 1946–1947) and the first chief minister (then called Premier [3]) of Bombay State (1947–1952).
Role in India’s Independence movement. Inspired by Tilak and Gandhi, Kher joined the Indian freedom movement. He participated in the Non-Cooperation Movement (1920). He was arrested for his involvement in the Salt Satyagraha (1930) and Quit India Movement (1942).
Balasaheb Gangadhar Kher, also known as B. G. Kher was the first chief minister (then called prime minister) of Bombay State. He was one among the first recipients of Padma Vibhushan, second highest civilian honour of India.
Dr. Rajendra Prasad – at the time the president of India – appointed the Official Language Commission on June 7, 1955, with B. G. Kher as its chairperson. (Kher was the first chief minister of the state of Bombay after Independence.) The Commission submitted its report on July 31, 1956.

Apr 9, 2022 · In 1955, the President of India appointed an Official Language Commission under the chairmanship of B.G. Kher. In 1956, the commission submitted its report to the President. The Commission’s report was examined by a Parliamentary committee under the chairmanship of Gobind Ballabh Pant.
Legacy & Journey. Legacy like no other. Born in the Ratnagiri district of Maharashtra, Balasaheb Gangadhar Kher spent his formative years in Kundgol (former Jamkhandi State). A passionate freedom fighter, he founded the Kherwadi Social Welfare Association (KSWA) in 1928.

B. G. Kher became the Prime Minister of the Bombay Presidency for the first time on 19 July 1937. The 7-member government resigned in November 1939 to protest the inclusion of British India in the Second World War .
