May 6, 2024 · Bhisham Sahni (born August 8, 1915, Rawalpindi, British India [now in Pakistan]—died July 11, 2003, Mumbai) was a Hindi writer, actor, teacher, translator, and polyglot who was especially known for his poignant and realistic work Tamas (1974; Darkness), depicting the aftermath of the 1947 partition of India. In 1986 filmmaker Govind Nihalani adapted the work into a made-for-television miniseries, casting the author in the role of the Sikh character Karmo.
