Masaan (transl. 'Crematorium'; also known as Fly Away Solo in English) is a 2015 Indian Hindi-language independent drama film starring Richa Chadda and Vicky Kaushal in lead roles. It is Kaushal's debut Hindi film, and also the directorial debut of Neeraj Ghaywan.
Masaan (मसान) is a Hindi word, which is nothing but a tadbhav, a deformed version of Sanskrit (an Hindi) word shmashaan (श्मशान). Masaan, or Shmashaan, means a crematorium, a place where dead bodies are cremated.
The title ‘Masaan’ refers to the burial grounds emblematic of the place where the soul can finally attain freedom from the cage of the body. A place of both ‘burning’ and ‘salvation’, the setting is central to the film and its ambivalence is beautifully captured.
