Other tributes have covered Richard's myriad groundbreaking scientific and professional achievments, so I will instead attempt to give a glimpse into the character and personality of this unique individual who influenced the lives of so many in such fundamental ways.

Dec 4, 2021 · LA JOLLA, CA—Richard Lerner, M.D., a scientific pioneer who developed technologies that had a major impact on science and medicine, and who played a critical role in shaping Scripps Research and San Diego’s burgeoning life sciences sector, passed away on December 2, 2021. He was 83 years old.
Richard M. Lerner is the Bergstrom Chair in Applied Developmental Science and the Director of the Institute for Applied Research in Youth Development at Tufts University. He went from kindergarten through Ph.D. within the New York City public schools, completing his doctorate at the City University of New York in 1971 in developmental psychology.
Jun 4, 2012 · Richard Alan Lerner (Chicago, USA, 1938) studied medicine at Northwestern University and Stanford, earning his MD at the latter in 1964. Following internship at the Palo Alto Stanford Hospital in 1965, he began his career in research and teaching in the Department of Experimental Pathology at The Scripps Research Institute in La Jolla (California), an institution that he led from 1986 to 2012.
