The film claims to be based on a 2001 non-fiction book entitled Beware the Night by Ralph Sarchie and Lisa Collier Cool, and its marketing campaign highlighted that it was "inspired by actual accounts", however the plot is an original piece written by director Derrickson.

May 8, 2007 · With time, the movie shows 2 of them trying to make peace by delivering a letter to the Vatican, but they are rebuked. This is perhaps the saddest part of the film. The take home point of this documentary is that sexual abuse by anyone is abhorrent, but especially so when it is perpetrated by people who we believe are supposed to protect us.
