Based on a novel by Guy de Maupassant, this drama from director Albert Lewin follows the misanthropic career of Georges Duroy, a writer who remorselessly uses and discards one woman after another to advance his position in Parisian society.
Georges (George Sanders) is a womanizer out to increase his social status. He attends a party with his friend Charles (John Carradine) and Charles' wife, Madeleine (Ann Dvorak). There, he meets Madeleine's friend Clotilde de Marelle (Angela Lansbury). Clotilde and Georges fall in love, but when Charles dies Georges marries Madeleine for her money. He then frames Madeleine for adultery, and marries Suzanne Walter (Susan Douglas), but his social climbing catches up with him after they divorce.
The Private Affairs of Bel Ami: “A stick like that of Punch”. A puppet show gives Albert Lewin’s picaresque “history of a scoundrel” its leading metaphor – a symbol of patriarchal privilege, female oppression and sexual energy. The first thing we see is a Hollywood studio recreation, circa 1946, of a Paris street, circa 1880.
