He is one of only two Italian Formula One World Champions in the history of the sport, and the only one winning his two championships in a Ferrari . Ascari was born in Milan, the son of Antonio Ascari.

Son of the famous Antonio Ascari , who was European champion for Alfa Romeo in 1925, he is only one of two Italian Formula One Champions and the only one to do this in a Ferrari.
Alberto Ascari came from a motor racing family. Antonio, his father (below), was one of the very greatest drivers of the 1920s, the flamboyant star of the Alfa Romeo team run by Scuderia Ferrari.
Enzo Ferrari described Alberto Ascari as being 'virtually impossible to overtake' when leading. It is a notion to which the 1952 season attests, since Ascari was victorious in six of the year's eight races, before going on to win the first three grands prix of 1953 (not counting the Indianapolis 500).
