He immigrated to Mexico and then the U.S. with his mother and sister, eventually settling in New York. His father initially stayed behind in Cuba to support the Cuban Revolution, but joined his family five years later. As an adult, Ichaso became a filmmaker, with his first work being the indie Spanish-language film El Super, which was released in 1979.
