As she was born on Dipawali, she has also named as Dhanalakshmi (nickname of which is Dhanno). She belongs to the Brahmin family of the Varanasi. Her father, Sukhadev Maharaj, was also a Kathak performer and teacher.

It is based on a short story Layli Asmaner Ayna in Bengali language by Jnanpith Award-winning writer Mahasweta Devi, which presents a fictionalised account of vendetta within a thuggee cult in the holy Indian town of Varanasi.
