Immunoglobulin M (IgM) is the third most common serum immunoglobulin accounting for 5–10 per cent of total levels. It is also a component of secretory immunoglobulins at the mucosal surfaces and in breast milk. Secreted IgM normally exists as a pentamer but it can be also detected as a monomer.
