Much like Wakai hito (1937) and Nakimushi kozo (1938) , this is another minor gem from Toyoda.Set in a small rural town where even the express train won't stop — if the train stopped there was a chance of this town seeing some development but instead it's quickly dying.

Toyoda favors the sadism and intensity of the story rather than its theatricality, and delivers in terms of shock... and you know I like that kind of stuff. Review by Todd ★★★½ Very cruel story — Artaud level cruel — pretty poorly told, i.e. weird narrative omissions, undifferentiated tone & apparent disinterest in tension or release.

Nine maids serve the household of a writer and his wife. The couple treat their maids like daughters and marry them off to eligible men. So, they are forever looking for new maids. As the years go by maid servants become hired help and more bossy and independent, so Chikura and his wife find themselves adjusting their lives to keep up with changing times.
