  2. Philadelphia-born bassist Stanley Clarke has been a pioneer of both the electric and upright acoustic bass due to his virtuosic technique. He got his start playing with straight-up jazzmen such as Horace Silver and Joe Henderson, but became known as one of the prime movers in the jazz-rock fusion movement of the 1970s as a member of fusion supergroup Return to Forever.
