Amanda Kramer's Please Baby Please attempts to luxuriate in that candy-colored history of cinematic mannerisms, but does so from the strangely comfortable position of 2022's era of comedic capitalism (Marvel c.s.) and New Sincerity (anything American indie). That is a wholly different starting point than the queer liberation of the '70s, the anxious queer fatalism the '80s, or the Hollywood absorption of the non-heteronormative of the '90s and '00s.
