Robert Lantos is a seminal figure in the rise of the Canadian film industry. He launched his first company in 1972 while a master’s student at McGill University and went on to establish several production companies over the course of more than four decades.
Born in Hungary in 1949, Robert (Janos) Lantos immigrated to Uruguay in 1958 and Canada in 1963. He studied film and literature at McGill University and formed a small company with his friend Victor Loewy, Vivafilm, in 1972.
In 1985, Lantos merged with producers Denis Héroux and John Kemeny to create Alliance Communications Corp. Alliance grew exponentially into Canada’s largest production-distribution company with a succession of hit television shows such as Night Heat, E.N.G., Due South, North of 60, and features such as Black Robe (Genie Award winner for Best Picture and the Golden Reel Award), David Cronenberg’s Crash (Golden Reel Award-winner) and Atom Egoyan’s The Sweet Hereafter (Genie Award for ...
