As per the Indian Constitution, 'Minimum Wage' has been defined as the level of income for skilled and unskilled workers which ensures a sustaining standard of living while also providing for some measure of comfort. A minimum wage not just supports the bare level of employment, but also seeks for viable continuous improvement.
Minimum Wages Act of 1948 is legislation enforced by the Government of India to fix minimum rates of wages that specific employees are bound to receive. It aims to protect employees against exploitation and ensure that workers are paid fair wages for their services.

The Act empowers the Government to fix minimum wages for employees working in specified employments. It provides for review and revision of minimum wages already fixed after suitable intervals not exceeding five years.
