Gawa was born into an aristocratic family and was the last heiress in the Chogyal dynasty of rulers who ruled sections of Sikkim, Arunachal Pradesh and Meghalaya. In 1989, Danny’s mother had met her in Gangtok and instantly liked her and decided to marry Gawa with Danny.
Denzongpa wrote and acted in the Nepali film Saino. His nephew Ugyen Chhopel directed it. He has sung its title song and a duet with Deepa Narayan, wife of Udit Narayan. At FTII, Denzongpa became very good friends with Jaya Bachchan, who happened to be his classmate. On Jaya’s suggestion, ‘Tshering Phintso Denzongpa’ adopted a simpler name- Danny! Denzongpa, who was not well-acquainted with Hindi found it very tough to land up roles initially in his career.
Currently, Danny Denzongpa lives in Mumbai with his wife Gawa. They have two children: Rinzing and Pema.
