About the Department . The Department of Law, North Eastern Hill University (NEHU), Shillong was established in 2005. Over the past one decade the Department has made significant progress in terms of restructuring courses and syllabi, introducing new course, experimenting with innovative techniques of imparting legal education and strengthening its Clinical Programme in order to give due emphasis to the expanding horizon of legal profession.

The North-Eastern Hill University Act (24 of 1973) passed by both Houses of Parliament received the assent of the President of India on May 26th, 1973. It was published in the Gazette of India (Extraordinary) on Saturday, May 26th, 1973 together with the First Schedule of the Act incorporating the Statutes of the University.
The North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU) Library, which started with a collection of 600 books in 1973, is now a premier university library of the North-Eastern Region of India with a collection of over 2.9 lakh volumes of books and bound periodicals supplemented by the enormous information resources now available through the e-ShodhSindhu Consortium for Higher Education Resources and the links to global information resources and services provided on its webpage.
