Steiger was born in Westhampton, New York, on April 14, 1925. He was the son of a vaudeville performer and a housewife. He began acting in high school and went on to study at the Actors Studio in New York City. Steiger made his film debut in 1952 in the film noir The Big Combo.
Steiger had made his stage debut in 1946 in ‘Curse you, Jack Dalton!’ a year before he joined Actors Studio. Later he made his TV debut with ‘Telas, the King’ (1950) and film debut with a small role in ‘Teresa’ (1951).
