Martin Margiela (b. Louvain, 1957) graduated from the fashion department of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts, Antwerp, in 1980. After a stint as Jean Paul Gaultier’s assistant between 1984 and 1987, he was associated with the Antwerp school and became the only Belgian designer of his generation to found his own fashion house in Paris.
Maison Margiela is a fashion house founded by the Limbourg-born designer, Martin Margiela. Born in 1959, Margiela studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts Antwerp, and was one of the first wave of talent to emerge from the city in the early eighties, graduating a year after a group of designers known as the Antwerp Six, whom he is often closely associated with.

He worked for Jean Paul Gaultier and Hermès before he founded his fashion house, Maison Martin Margiela, in 1988 (now known as Maison Margiela). He left the label in 2009 and John Galliano is the current Creative Director.
