Following his death in 1556, his widow and chief consort, the Persian born Empress Bega Begum (also often known as Haji Begum), commissioned a magnificent tomb for her late husband.
Humayun’s Tomb. Humayun’s tomb is sublimely well proportioned, seeming to float above its symmetrical gardens. It's thought to have inspired the Taj Mahal, which it predates by 60 years. Constructed for the Mughal emperor in the mid-16th century by Haji Begum, Humayun's Persian-born wife, the tomb marries Persian and Mughal elements.
Humayun’s tomb is known as the first example of the monumental scale that would characterize subsequent Mughal imperial architecture. Commissioned, it is believed, by Humayun’s senior widow and principal wife, Haji Begam, or by her son Akbar, the tomb is the first to mark the grave of a Mughal emperor; Humayun’s father Babur, who founded the dynasty, had requested out of piety that he be buried in a garden.

This dynastic mausoleum was built in 1570 for Humayun, the second Mughal Emperor of India, and now contains about 150 graves of ruling family members. It uses mainly red sandstone, with white and black marble inlays.

This Persian landscaping style consists of four rivers representing milk, honey, water and wine. Channels of water divided the site into four squares.
