May 1, 2024 · Birmingham City University, a public institute, came into being as a merger of five individual colleges in 1971 as the City of Birmingham Polytechnic. Those five colleges were Birmingham College of Art, Birmingham School of Music, Birmingham College of Commerce, South Birmingham Technical College, and North Birmingham Technical College.
