Downing College, which was the only college to be added to the University of Cambridge between 1596 and 1869, remains today one of the best higher education institutions in the country. Jun 26, 2024 · Downing is saddened to share the news that Emeritus Fellow and former Vice-Master Dr Martin Mays died on Sunday. Dr Mays first came to Downing as a Natural Sciences student, matriculating in 1957. He was a Fellow from 1965 to 2004 and held the roles of Admissions Tutor, Senior Tutor, and Director of Studies in Chemistry during his time at the College.
The teaching of Downing’s undergraduates is shared between the University and the College. University faculties and departments hold lectures and practical classes, attended by students from all colleges. Individual or small-group teaching is provided by the College, taught by our Fellows and by those from elsewhere in the University.
