Both the Victoria University and UMIST had their roots in the nineteenth century although, apart from the relatively brief period of the First World War, neither of them was particularly involved in aeronautics until after the Second World War.
History and heritage. The Department of Earth and Environmental Science was formed in 2016, but its origins date back to the establishment of the first universities in Manchester. In 1851 William Crawford Williamson was appointed the first Professor of Natural Sciences at Owens College, later the Victoria University of Manchester.
