Jul 1, 2022 · In 1497, King Manuel I of Portugal (r. 1495-1521) selected the nobleman Vasco da Gama (c. 1469-1524) to find the way to the spices. Da Gama was to follow the route to the Indian Ocean pioneered by Bartolomeu Dias (c. 1450-1500), who had learned to use the strong east winds of the mid-Atlantic to hurl him and his crew around the Cape of Good Hope.

MANUEL I° (1469–1521), king of Portugal 1495–1521. He was termed Manuel the Great because of the achievements of his reign: Vasco da Gama's discovery of the sea passage to India via the Cape of Good Hope (1498) and the acquisition of Brazil (1500). For the Jewish citizens, however, Manuel's reign brought an end to their life in Portugal.
Manuel I of Portugal, nicknamed the Fortunate (Alcochete, May 31, 1469-Lisbon, December 13, 1521) was king of Portugal. He was the eighth son of the infant Ferdinand of Portugal, Duke of Viseo and grandson of Edward I, and Beatrice, granddaughter of John I.
This day in 1469 marked the birth of Manuel I, the king who ruled over Portugal from 1495 until 1521. His reign was also Portugal’s golden age, when Portuguese explorers sailed to the far reaches of the world. The colonial empire of Manuel I stretched along the coasts of Africa and reached to India and China in the east and Brazil in the west.
