He adopted the pen name Sahir Ludhianvi with ‘Sahir’ meaning ‘magic’ or ‘enchanting’ and ‘Ludhianvi’ denoting his roots in Ludhiana. After settling in Lahore in 1943, he released his first book called Talkhiyaan (Bitterness) in 1945.
