At one point, 70% of US phosphate was mined and processed in the Lakeland area. Nearly three-quarters of it were used in the US, with Japan as the largest foreign consumer.
Lakeland, city, Polk county, central Florida, U.S., about 30 miles (50 km) northeast of Tampa and some 10 miles (16 km) west of Winter Haven. It was founded in 1883 by Kentucky businessman Abraham Munn, who purchased a large plot of land near the newly built railroad.
While most of Polk County's early history centered on the two cities of Bartow and Fort Meade, eventually, people entered the areas in northern Polk County and began settling in the areas which became Lakeland.
