When the niece of Maharajah Uthram Thirunal, Rani of Travancore, Pooradam Thirunal Lakshmi Bayi, died in 1857 during childbirth, he decided to adopt Lakshmi Bayi and her younger sister, Parvathi Bayi, to become the Senior and Junior Ranis of Attingal.
He died from injuries after a car accident, at the Ochira District Hospital, Kerala, 30 December 2005. The couple has three children: Prince Pooruruttathi Thirunal Marthanda Varma, Prince Avittom Thirunal Aditya Varma, and Princess Bharani Thirunal Lekha Parvathi Bayi (adopted).

Rani Bharani Thirunal Parvathi Bayi (born 1850) was a junior Rani of Travancore as known as ' Attingal Elaya Rani ' Her consort was Kilimanoor Kerala Varma Koyi Thampuran. Parvathi Bayi was born in 1850 as the daughter of Bharani Thirunal Amma Thampuran of Utsava Madom Palace in Mavelikara.
