Menon began his career in the entertainment industry as a still photographer, while also dabbling in work on fashion shoots and corporate films. He later got into commercials, and eventually graduated into working on them as a director.

Menon was born on April 20, 1963 in Cochin, Kerala. He trained under cinematographer Garret Brown in America in 1984, and founded “Rajiv Menon Productions” (RMP) in 1986, where he began his career in TV commercials. RMP has produced over 300 commercials for leading brands in India.
He started his career as a cinematographer. His debut movie was Prathap K. Pothan 's Telugu film, Chaithanya. Mani Ratnam’s Bombay happened to be the milestone movie of his career as a cinematographer and after that Rajiv didn’t look back.
