  4. The first Hertford College began life as Hart Hall (Aula Cervina) in the 1280s, a small tenement built roughly where the college's Old Hall is today, a few paces along New College Lane on the southern side. [5]

  5. There has been a college or hall on the Hertford site since the 13th century, previous iterations being Hart Hall and Magdalen Hall. But after several dramatic events, including bankruptcy in 1816 and the collapse of our buildings along Catte Street, we were refounded as the second Hertford College in 1874.

  6. Hart Hall was originally established around the 1280s as an academic hall for students studying at the University. It carried on in this form until 1740 when Principal Richard Newton re-formed Hart Hall as an independent College. This first Hertford College was not successful and closed in 1818.
