Aug 31, 2024 · In 1986, St Joseph’s College became the first affiliated college in Karnataka to offer postgraduate programmes. In 1988, it became the first college in Karnataka to get a Research Centre, and in 2005, it was one of five colleges in Karnataka that was awarded academic autonomy.
The college was founded in 1882 by the Fathers of the French Foreign Mission. The need for instituting a College of this magnitude in Bangalore was felt by the catholic Missionaries and it was the vicar apostolic of the coramandel coast, the Rev. Dr. Bonnand, who propounded the idea, in 1841, in a letter to Rev. Fr. Bertrand.
