In that example I'm assuming "buffer" exists, and is populated with some data and that will be written to "test.bin" as pointed to by write_ptr. If you run that you could then "hexdump" the test.bin file and see those bytes in it. –
When you open a file in binary mode, then you are essentially working with the bytes type. So when you write to the file, you need to pass a bytes object, and when you read from it, you get a bytes object. In contrast, when opening the file in text mode, you are working with str objects. So, writing “binary” is really writing a bytes string:

Mar 24, 2016 · 1. Well, Google certainly gives results for "detect encoding online", but I doubt a .bin file contains text. I suggest you run a file format identifying program on it, e.g. TrIDNet. That might prove it to be binary. Notepad++ also does automatic encoding detection, as do web browsers. You could rename the file and drop it into Notepad++ or Firefox.
