  2. Originally, Hapjeong-dong was a part of Yeonhui-bang, a division of Seoul that encompassed approximately Seodaemun-gu and the western part of Mapo-gu. The meaning of Hapjeong-dong, written in Hanja as 蛤 井 洞, was "clam well". Later the Hanja transcription of Hapjeong was changed to 合 井.

    • Seongsu. Seongsu has quickly risen in the list of hip areas in Seoul in the past few years. Formerly an industrial area, Seoul’s young entrepreneurs have come into the area to convert warehouses and factories into hip cafes, restaurants, and galleries.
    • Mangwon. Even though this neighborhood is in the biggest city in South Korea, it has a quiet, small-town charm. In the area around Mangwon Market, you’ll find grandmas running open grocery markets that sell baskets of fruits and bundles of vegetables.

    • Mullae Art Village. Best for observing the life of an artist. Mullae-dong in our opinion was the most alternative and unique neighborhood in Seoul. Back in the 70s it housed numerous small-scale steel mills, but most of them relocated in the 90s to cheaper neighborhoods.
    • Hapjeong-dong. Best for unique cafes and local hangouts. Hapjeong is a non-touristy area where you'll find the young and trendy. We found it to have the highest concentration of hip cafes.
    • Ikseon-dong. Best for getting lost in a maze of fun-packed historic streets. Ikseong-dong is a unique neighborhood where you'll see tiny walking streets nestled between beautifully restored 1920s Korean hanoks (houses).
    • Seongsu-dong. Best for experiencing local life and Instagrammable spots. We stayed in Seongsu-dong for six nights and found it to be a hip, local area with many Instagrammable spots.
