- 1. (1809–74), US Supreme Court associate justice 1851–57. He resigned in protest over the Court's handling of the Dred Scott case 1857. He served as chief counsel to Andrew Johnson during Johnson's impeachment in 1868. His brother, George Ticknor Curtis (1812–94), a lawyer and writer, argued for the plaintiff before the US Supreme Court in the Dred Scott case.
