      • There's a lot of action but it's too far-fetched, even by anime standards, to be suspenseful and the violence is kept to PG limits so there's not much in the way of gore or bloodshed to keep viewers' attention. The whole thing is too crudely animated and designed to make this one even remotely watchable.

Jan 30, 2018 · The action was kind of weak, but there were a few fun sequences and dumb over the top stuff, like Doggy Soldier wrapping a string around his arm and making bow that was super accurate and deadly. I'm not going to lie though, probably the biggest reason I enjoyed this was the villain.

  3. Dog Soldier: Shadow of the Past is a crudely animated, flatly projected and intricately plotted OVA, which seems to be all about the pedestrian character beats and conspiracy twists. There's nothing wrong in trying to humanise the story, yet it's too contrived and tediously put together.

  7. No actual dogs were harmed or depicted in the production of this film. Review. I apologize in advance for the synopsis above, as I made this poorly-written, slipshod story sound a lot better than it really is. Dog Soldier may very well be the paragon of bad 80s anime.
