Rutherglen (/ ˈ r ʌ ð ər ɡ l ɪ n /; Scots: Ruglen, Scottish Gaelic: An Ruadh-Ghleann) is a town in South Lanarkshire, Scotland, immediately south-east of the city of Glasgow, three miles (five kilometres) from its centre and directly south of the River Clyde.
The ancient Royal Burgh of Rutherglen has been a thriving hub for nearly 1000 years and today retains an almost village-like atmosphere, despite being South Lanarkshire's third largest town.
Mar 26, 2024 · AS Brian McGraw suggested, Rutherglen is one of Scotland’s most ancient settlements. Its name has two possible derivations, either from the Gaelic for red glen, or from a legendary third-century king called Reuther who may have lived in the area.

Apr 2, 2024 · As the biggest settlement in that part of Lanarkshire, Rutherglen grew as a market town, but the bridging of the Clyde at Glasgow stopped it from becoming a major port, though there was a Rutherglen Quay to service the small boats which came to the town. And as Glasgow grew, Rutherglen’s importance declined.

The ancient town of Rutherglen was granted Royal Burgh status by King David I in 1126, and existed as a Lanarkshire burgh in its own right for more than 800 years. The town has witnessed some important events in Scottish history, and is the birthplace of many famous and notable Scots.
