The populous Wapentake of Morley joined with the more thinly-peopled Wapentakes of Ewcross and Staincliffe to form the north-western division of the West Riding of Yorkshire. Later, the Wapentake had its lord of the manor, Ilbert de Lacy, a follower of William the Conqueror.
